POSITION DESCRIPTION:
This position will strategically and tactically lead and manage a new organization within the Smart Grid & System Operations division in order to execute and implement Austin Energy’s Strategic Goal of Grid Modernization. Grid Modernization is essential to Austin Energy to deliver customer value, operational and business excellence/efficiencies, smart infrastructure, and innovative technology needed for current and future business needs.

This position will lead and manage the following Advanced Technology Programs:

1. Advanced Metering Infrastructure
2. Transmission & Distribution Automation
3. Distributed Energy Resources Integration & Optimization
4. Asset Management
5. Operational Technology

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in leadership and management with experience overseeing a team of 25 or more staff including supervisors or managers.

Preferred Qualifications :

  1. Experience in program or project managing Smart Grid projects including:
    • Advanced Meter Infrastructure (Meter Data Management System, Headend System, RFI/Cell wireless communications, Cyber Security, metering operations)
    • Distributed Energy Resources (Demand Side Management, Grid Scale Battery Storage, Demand and Emergency Response).
    • Asset Management (Asset Risk Management system, GIS, Distribution Process improvement, Work Management System).
    • Grid Automation (ADMS, EMS, Stormcenter, Data concentrators/IED implementation).
    • Smart Grid Operational Technology integration.
  2. Experience in working in metering operations and integration (including testing, meter exchange programs).
  3. Experience in electric meter-to-cash process, remote connect/disconnect and revenue protection.
  4. Experience in utility data analytics platform (e.g. Dataraker).
  5. Experience in distribution feeder solar hosting capacity analysis.

Duties, Functions and Responsibilities

Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.

  1. Plans, organizes, directs, evaluates and controls Power Delivery Distribution activities.
  2. Manages personnel responsible for engineering designs and work orders for the installation of new and upgraded overhead and underground services; construction activities for customer and system requirements throughout the service area; installation and upgrade construction activities throughout the services area.
  3. Schedule staff, contractors, and materials for construction projects.
  4. Manages complex metering operations including specification, calibration, maintenance, and repair of residential, commercial and industrial metering.
  5. Serves as Vice President of Power Delivery in his/her absence.
  6. Oversees a multi-million-dollar budget with significant financial impact.
  7. Represents the City of Austin and Austin Energy interests to boards, commissions, and councils.
  8. Assists in electric system restoration due to outages caused by storms or equipment failure.
