Power Engineer - Metering

Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories (SEL) is seeking an individual to develop metering systems within our Research and Development organization. This engineer will lead product and system specifications that a multi-disciplinary team will follow to create new metering hardware and software. This engineer will teach fundamental and advanced metering concepts to internal and external engineers worldwide. A successful candidate will have at least five years’ experience integrating revenue and power quality meters into complex energy management systems. In depth knowledge in metrology, communications, and database management are all required skills.

Responsibilities:

  • Maintain a detailed understanding of electric revenue and power quality metering systems.
  • Lead in developing and analyzing product specifications and functional tests.
  • Lead in writing and maintaining application literature, instruction manuals and data sheets.
  • Lead in the development of technical and market analysis to evaluate proposed products or enhancements.
  • Conceive and develop concepts for new product ideas and enhancements.
  • Lead in evaluating competing products in the assigned product area.
  • Participate in standards committees as the company’s resident expert in metrology.
  • Present papers on metering innovations at industry technical meetings and conferences.
  • Serve as project manager and/or project technical lead.
  • Teach revenue and power quality metering fundamentals and complex applications to internal and external customers.
  • Design complex metering systems using SEL and third-party tools.
  • Demonstrate integrated metering systems to internal and external customers.
  • Assist in developing papers on innovative power system protection solutions.

Qualifications:

  • B.S. in Electrical Engineering or equivalent experience
  • A minimum of five years of working knowledge of electric metering systems
  • Extensive knowledge of medium and low-voltage electrical metering devices and systems
  • Knowledge of worldwide electric meter standards including ANSI, IEEE, IEC, MID, and CE.
  • Experience integrating large data sets across multiple databases into energy management systems.
  • Excellent technical training, speaking and writing skills
  • Strong writing, documentation, and speaking skills
  • Ability to learn new skills and assume new responsibilities
