Lead Software Engineer

Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories is expanding our Research & Development team and looking for an experienced software engineer to join us in our Protection Systems innovation efforts! You will work with a team of other software and power engineers to develop new, cutting edge relay technology, and work with leading experts in the industry – both external and internal. In addition to learning something new every day, you will work on digital signal processing and protection algorithms on some of SEL’s most advanced products – the SEL-400 series line of protection relays. Lead Software Engineer

Responsibilities:

  • Participate in preparation of specifications.
  • Design firmware/software.
  • Implement firmware/software designs.
  • Understand hardware and software interactions, and collaborate with Hardware Engineers.
  • Prepare and maintain designs and test documentation.
  • Review data sheets and instruction manuals.
  • Mentor Associate Engineers and Technicians.
  • Participate in industry technical meetings and conferences as needed to meet operational and strategic plans.
  • Continuously identify, measure, follow, and improve R&D processes.
  • Understand, create, simplify processes.

Qualifications:

  • B.S. in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or equivalent.
  • Typically 2+ years experience in embedded systems firmware development using C, C++, or assembly languages of:
  • real-time firmware design
  • multi-thread systems
  • design of automated unit test suites
  • Strong writing, documentation, and speaking skills
  • Ability to learn new skills and assume new responsibilities
  • Ability to work cooperatively in a team environment
  • Background check results satisfactory to SEL
  • Negative drug test result(s)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with embedded software development of one or more of the following:
  • Electric power system protection or control devices
  • Ethernet communication protocols
  • Human Machine Interfaces
  • Data Acquisition/Digital Signal Processing
  • Experience working with software development collaboration tools (Atlassian, ClearCase).
  • Project management
