$57.78-60.67 per hour.  Based on a 5-day, 40 hour work week, plus excellent benefits including a 9-80 work schedule.

NATURE OF POSITION

 

Under direction works with, coordinates and directs the work of a crew in connection with the construction and maintenance of overhead and underground electrical transmission and distribution systems and performs other related work as required.  This is an advanced journey level classification in the lineworker series.  Work in this class is distinguished from that of lower classes within the series by the level of responsibility assumed and the complexity of duties assigned.  Employees perform the most difficult and responsible types of duties including assigning work and providing lead direction to line crews.  Employees at this level are required to be fully trained in all procedures related to line work.

 

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

 

  1. Works with, coordinates and directs the work of a crew (a crew being two or more workers exclusive of the incumbent) in the installation, maintenance and operation of overhead and underground electrical transmission, distribution and street lighting systems with voltages up to and including 120 kV.
  2. Performs high voltage switching, including working with energized high voltage equipment with approved hotline maintenance equipment, and takes necessary clearances and no-tests required to do work safely.
    1. Reads and interprets blueprints, maps and drawings.
    2. Requisitions materials and keeps time and materials records.
    3. Drives and operates specialized vehicular equipment.
    4. Assists in the supervision, training and evaluation of assigned staff.

 

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

 

Possession of the employment standards does not assure advancement to the Examination or placement on the Eligible List. This is a competitive examination where a candidate’s performance in the Examination will be judged in comparison with the core competencies required of the job. To be considered, applicants should possess the combination of education and experience necessary to prove the required knowledge and abilities for the position.  A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

 

Education/Experience & Other Requirements

 

  1. Graduation from high school and completion of an approved electrical lineworker apprenticeship.
  2. Two years of recent and progressively responsible journey level lineworker experience in construction and maintenance of overhead and underground electrical transmission and distribution systems or equivalent.
  3. Possession of a valid Class A State of California Driver's License (or possession of a valid Class C license at the time of employment and the ability to obtain Class A within six months of employment) and a satisfactory driving record as conditions of initial and continued employment.  Employees in positions requiring a Class A license are subject to provisions of the Department of Transportation's drug and alcohol testing program.
  4. Willingness and/or ability to respond to after-hours emergency calls as required.

 

KNOWLEDGE OF the principles and practices of journey level linework in electrical transmission and distribution systems; materials, tools and methods used in electrical construction, installation and maintenance; State of California General Orders 95 and 128, Electrical Safety Orders, National Electrical Code and safe work practices and procedures and electrical tools and equipment.  ABILITY TO effectively plan, organize and direct the activities of a crew; schedule, oversee, monitor, and participate in assigned work; estimate materials and work hours required to perform a job; install and maintain overhead and underground electrical systems; work in high places; operate specialized vehicular equipment; read and interpret electrical plans, drawings and sketches; interpret electrical codes and laws; maintain records; communicate effectively; establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and the general public and assist in the supervision, training and evaluation of assigned staff.

 

AGENCY SHOP: Employees in this classification, as a condition of employment, must agree to union membership or payment of an in-lieu service fee or equivalent contribution to a designated charity.

 

SELECTION PROCESS

 

The examination process may include an application and supplemental questionnaire evaluation, a written exam, a performance exam, and/or an oral interview. The examination process may test for, but is not limited to, the essential knowledge and abilities listed in the job specification and announcement and will be designed to provide a comprehensive review of each candidate’s technical knowledge and overall suitability for the position.  Qualified applicants will be notified of the exact date, time, and location of examinations approximately two weeks in advance.  If applicants have not received written notice at least one week prior to the tentative test date listed in the flyer, they should contact the City of Alameda Human Resources Department at (510) 747-4900.

 

Candidates passing all components of the examination process will be placed on an Eligible List.  A list of names is certified to the department(s) having vacancies based on the type of examination conducted pursuant to the provision of the City’s Civil Service Rules.  Final selection will be made from the Eligible List by the Department Head subject to approval by the City Manager. The Department Head may utilize additional selection procedures to make a final hiring decision.  Placement on an Eligible List does not guarantee employment.  Tie scores will be broken by giving priority to the candidate with the highest rating on the most heavily weighted portion of the exam or if weighted 100% on any given portion, based on the earliest application date and time.  Prior to appointment, a thorough reference check will be conducted which may include a credit check and background.  The selection process may be evaluated and revised based on the number of qualified applicants. Federal law requires that prior to employment, you must furnish proof of your identity and eligibility for employment in the United States, as required the U.S. Department of Justice.
