Software Engineer - Firmware

Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories (SEL) seeks a Lead Software Engineer to work in our Power Systems department. In this role you will work as part of a cross functional team to develop firmware and hardware platforms for power system protection devices. The firmware for these platforms will be written in C++. You will lead efforts to specify, design, implement, and test solutions for protection system platforms, furthering SEL’s mission of making electric power safer, more reliable, and more economical.

Software Engineer - Firmware

Responsibilities:

  • Specify, design, implement, and test elegant, bullet-proof solutions for mission critical firmware.
  • Lead technical teams to solve complex problems.
  • Collaborate with hardware and software teams to achieve seamless product integration.
  • Serve as a technical lead to understand and implement customer driven change requests.
  • Mentor Engineers, Associate Engineers, and Technicians.
  • Serve as project technical contact.
  • Interface with Manufacturing to ensure the manufacturability of our products.
  • Participate in industry technical meetings and conferences as needed to meet operational and strategic plans.
  • Continuously identify, measure, and improve processes.
  • Understand, create, and simplify solutions to solve challenging problems.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • B.S. in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering or equivalent
  • Typically 6+ years’ experience in either of the following areas:
  • Embedded systems firmware development including:
  • real-time firmware design
  • C and assembly languages
  • Object oriented firmware development including:
  • object oriented design
  • object oriented languages (C++)
  • Proven experience leading and completing complex projects
  • Ability to meet Motor Vehicle Report Qualification Standards of SEL
  • Strong writing, documentation, and speaking skills
  • Ability to learn new skills and assume new responsibilities
  • Ability to work cooperatively in a team environment
  • Background check results satisfactory to SEL
  • Negative drug test result(s)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Embedded Linux systems development
  • Scripting languages including Python or Perl
  • Industrial controls
  • 3-phase electric power systems
  • Ethernet protocols (ARP, Ethernet, IP, TCP, UDP)
  • Digital and analog circuitry
  • Digital communications and signal processing
  • Project management
  • Low level firmware development including
  • Writing assembly
  • Controlling microprocessor peripherals
