Position Summary

Under general direction of Claims Manager or Senior Claims Investigator, responsible to conduct investigations for routine to moderately complex public claims and company damage claims. Determine liability and negotiate settlements within assigned approval authority with input from Claims Manager as well as management and/or legal counsel, as directed or required. Assist with major incident investigations, collection of evidence, development of case files, and litigation support. May assist with training of assigned business areas on risk mitigation policies and process, as needed. 

 

Essential Responsibilities

Public and Company Claims and Settlement Payment - Under the general direction of Claims Manager or Senior Claims Investigator, determine liability and negotiate settlements for routine to moderately complex public and company damage claims within assigned approval authority, with input from management, or legal counsel, as directed or required. Within a timely manner, ensure denial notification or payment is made to public claimants, payment is received for damage claims and pursue delinquent damage claim accounts. Mediate between customer and company contractors, as needed. 

 

Major Incidents –Assist and support more senior claims investigators with professional investigations of major incidents, in accordance with guidelines and as directed by Claims Manager or Senior Claims Investigator. Assist with evidence collection, research, documentation (e.g., incident reports) and case file development in accordance with guidelines. May obtain witness statements and communicate with regulatory officials and agencies (local, state and federal) to provide reports and obtain records, as needed. Due to that, the ability to be on-call 24/7 on a rotational basis is required.  

 

Litigation Support – For assigned cases and under the direction of Claims Manager or more Senior claims investigator, provide litigation support throughout the process including strategic planning, data gathering, participation in mediations, settlement conferences, court proceedings, working to ensure case facts are effectively communicated and documentation is collected, ensure case files are well developed and accurate, and collaborate with legal counsel on determination of appropriate reserve funding.

 

Risk Mitigation – May assist with specialized training to assigned business units to ensure that first responders are trained to take appropriate action when an incident occurs for which the company may have legal liability. May participate in development of specialized training for first responders.

Minimum Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent required.
  • Post secondary education or training in general business, communications, engineering and/or gas/electric utility industry preferred.
  • Minimum of 3 years utility (e.g., Billing, Customer Service, Engineering, Damage Prevention, Safety, etc.) and/or claims-related work experience required.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to multitask.
  • Ability to interact with others (e.g., customers, co-workers, etc.) and to respond in a professional, tactful, and courteous manner at all times regarding Claims Investigation matters.
  • Conflict resolution and negotiation skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • General familiarity with computer based-systems (e.g., Riskmaster, REA, OMS, CRS, WEBI, etc.) and working knowledge of Internet and Microsoft office applications (e.g., Outlook, Word, Excel) required.
  • Travel required (e.g., site investigations, court proceedings, etc.).
  • Valid drivers license with good driving record and personal transportation required.
  • Availability to be on-call 24/7 on a rotational basis is required.
  • Position requires exposure to noise, dirt, odors, confined/restricted areas.
  • Ability to work in inclement weather conditions (hot and cold condition)

 

Preferred

  • Ability to demonstrate teamwork and work with all levels of the organization.
  • Experience with SAP
  • Experience in legal, general legality insurance, fire investigation, utilities claims and/or gas and electric operations
