The New York Independent System Operator (NYISO) manages the efficient flow of electricity on more than 11,000 circuit-miles of high-voltage transmission lines, dispatching power from hundreds of generating units across the state. The successful intern will participate in the development and implementation of a variety of market-based projects including:
The successful intern will work with market experts to develop presentations and/or other materials that explain the purpose of various portions of the market design and how it works, including how carbon pricing would impact the markets and the role of capacity markets in the grid of the future. This individual will assist the market design team with improving their tools for valuing market design proposals, as well as assist with the development of processes that can determine impacts of a proposal on consumers, simulate how a proposal would modify pricing and/or market outcomes using regression techniques, and create a sustainable process for maintaining the market design proposal library.
The intern will evaluate the reliability of the New York State power grid to ensure sufficient resources exist to meet New York’s energy needs. This individual will evaluate electricity consumption patterns within New York, evaluate the reliability implications of recent historical trends and predicted future trends in electricity consumption and present the findings to NYISO management and senior management.
The intern will assist in developing the Market Scan for NYISO Stakeholder Companies Strategic Plans and Initiatives. This individual will also assist with research and analysis for the development of NYISO 2020-2024 Strategic Plan and 2020 Business Plan, create a macro-environmental framework for strategic analysis, and develop a library of secondary research on key industry subject matter, including renewable energy technology, DER, energy efficiency, EV charging, blockchain, etc.
The intern will work with the Market Validation team to expand the types of data analysis the team performs. This individual will perform statistical analysis on historic pricing data and develop new charts, graphs, and reporting metrics. This will include analyzing historic pricing data for trends and expanding the daily metrics produced for the Coordinated Transaction Scheduling (CTS) programs to ensure that CTS was executed correctly per the tariff and joint procedures, to identify any anomalies, and to improve awareness about the program’s performance and trends.
