Controller

The controller position is responsible for planning, directing and coordinating Platte River’s accounting, annual budget, financial statement and audit preparation, and other financial reporting and control activities.  The position establishes, monitors, and enforces internal financial and accounting controls, policies and procedures, support the strategic financial planning process, and monitors and confirms financial condition through an external audit.  

The position leads, manages, supervises and oversees staff engaged in accounting, budgeting, financial and operational functions including extensive analysis and reporting; and is dedicated to developing and implementing initiatives that improve organizational effectiveness.  The controller ensures that all accounting allocations are appropriately made and documented and that associated risk is appropriately managed.

Essential functions

  • Directly supervises and oversees the accounting team and guides financial decisions by establishing, monitoring and enforcing sound internal controls, financial policies and procedures that are consistent with organizational strategies and goals
  • Coordinates, oversees and ensures the annual budget, financial audit and month-end close are completed by establishing schedules, collecting, analyzing and consolidating financial data and recommending plans, collaborating with internal and external customers and senior leaders
  • Assures compliance with state budget law; ensures that accounting records are kept in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and Governmental Accounting Standards Board accounting pronouncements; ensures that external tax reporting is in compliance with applicable state and federal regulations
  • Achieves budget objectives including monitoring revenues and expenditures, analyzing variances and suggesting corrective actions 
  • Provides status and information regarding the organization’s financial condition by collecting, interpreting, analyzing and reporting financial data using effective financial reporting systems that provide accurate and timely information
  • Prepares special reports by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing complex information and trends
  • Implements new accounting standards, complies with legal requirements and various filing requirements, coordinates the flow of information, and manages and improves process and procedures
  • Verifies the integrity of all accounting and financial systems, processes and data
  • Participates in a variety of special projects, compiles special reports and makes presentations as needed to leadership and management
  • Communicates and leads in an ethical manner that builds trust and relationships within the department and across the organization
  • Maintains professional and technical skills and knowledge by self-learning, as well as attending educational workshops, reviewing professional publications, and participating in professional associations and industry groups
  • Coaches and mentors employees, identifies training opportunities needed to maximize performance, and manages and evaluates employee performance
  • Represents Platte River on audit committees, interfaces with external auditors, and represents the organization in a professional manner to external organizations and owner communities
  • Maintains regular and reliable attendance
  • Performs other duties as assigned

 

Minimum qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting  from an accredited four-year college or university
  •  Minimum five (5) years progressively responsible accounting experience (public utility accounting preferred)
  • Minimum three (3) years of related and direct supervisory and management experience
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (with emphasis in governmental accounting practices preferred)
  • Strong analytical skills and the ability to understand complex accounting issues
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills
  • Ability to work effectively with all levels of management and employees
  • Ability to develop strong, collaborative relationships and to mentor and coach others in understanding and meeting established standards and ability to build highly effective teams
  • Detail oriented
  • Ability to balance workloads  for accounting staff with competing demands
  • Advanced computer skills (MS Office, financial enterprise system)
  • Strong business judgment and acumen
  • Ability to see and communicate organizational goals and align actions with strategies
  • Current certified public accountant (CPA) license
  • Current valid driver’s license and ability to remain insurable under Platte River’s vehicle liability policy

 

Desired qualifications

  •  Master’s degree in accounting, finance, business or other related field 
  • Knowledge and understanding of Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) Uniform System of Accounts

 

Bi-weekly salary range for this position: $ 4,305 - 5,919 (DOQ)
