Data Scientist

Requisition ID:  30588

NextEra Energy Resources is one of the largest wholesale generators of electric power and renewable energy from the wind and sun in North America.

Position Specific Description

At NextEra Energy IT, we’re passionate about building software that solves problems. We partner with all areas of the business to transform how they use data and technology. Our software has been used to predict work orders for all of our 120 wind sites, discover bad solar cells on our solar farms, gain insight into inefficiencies, and more. If these types of projects excite you, we'd love for you to join us.

NextEra Energy’s Data Scientist teams face unique technical challenges of scale and complexity within an everchanging business environment. By enhancing the ability of business units across NextEra Energy to make data-driven decisions, our team of Data Scientists help define how we shape the next generation of NextEra Energy’s successes.
In partnership with business leaders, Data Scientists are responsible for identifying issues within our business & engineering workflows, iterating on improvements, and measuring their impact across the business — all through analyzing and contributing back to NextEra Energy’s internal data platform. Data Scientists are given direct ownership of key areas of focus for NextEra Energy’s business, and delivering meaningful change is their primary measure of success.

Core Responsibilities:
You will be a Data Scientist.
You will write code to transform noisy real-world data into high-signal models that stand the test of time.

You will be an archeologist.
You will excavate the hidden insights in NextEra Energy’s internal data that will revolutionize our business strategy. At your fingertips is NextEra Energy’s cutting-edge data management, integration, and analytical platform, eliminating common data management obstacles such as data duplication, questionable data provenance, and fragmented collaboration.

You will be a storyteller.
You will communicate your insights in a way that resonates with your partners — including NextEra Energy’s senior leadership — to turn theory into action. The story of our business is often a complex one to tell, so you must craft your message to help your audience understand and engage.

You will be a leader & entrepreneur.
You will come to understand the nature of how NextEra Energy operates, and proactively identify new areas of investment and/or improvement for the business.

What We Value:
• Intellectual curiosity and creativity.
• A background in science or engineering, especially in fields such as Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science, Industrial Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and/or Software Engineering. Statistical aptitude is required.
• Excellent communication skills.
• Previous experience in a role that requires rigorous financial or business analytics.
• Comfort in a fast-paced environment. Able to consistently revise models in response to new information.

Desired Qualifications:
• Solid understanding about ML such as Neural Networks, Random Forests, simple to complex regressions, NLP, etc.
• Experience in implementing ML models into a production environment not just research.
• Effective communication skills and ability to work in cross functional groups.
• Excellent skills in SW design, debugging, and problem solving toward training and data / statistics analysis.
• Passion for customers, quality driven.
• Proficiency with programming languages such as Python, R, SQL, Java, or similar languages.
