Director of Transmission Strategy

This position is responsible for leading ACES’ physical transmission strategy function for Members and Customers and for the coordination of internal functions that support physical transmission strategy services.  This role will interface with senior staff and executive leadership of ACES’ clients and directs efforts across departments at ACES to provide analysis, reporting and strategic advice on transmission.  ACES’ clients operate in most of the major RTOs/ISOs as well as traditional (non-RTO/non-ISO) regions.  The position will require extensive integration with ACES’ existing Financial Transmission, Portfolio Strategy, and Regulatory and Market Affairs teams.

  • Candidate should possess a bachelor’s degree in an appropriate discipline with extensive experience in the electric utility industry
  • Prefer 10 years direct experience, preferably with multiple RTOs/ISOs
  • Experience with transmission planning and engineering studies required, practical experience with transmission interconnection requests preferred
  • Experience with regional/RTO-scale/high-voltage powerflow modeling software required
  • Extensive knowledge of high-voltage transmission systems, interconnection processes, and transmission planning and transmission rates required
  • Experience with system production cost modeling strongly preferred
  • Working knowledge of the energy commodity markets and regional supply and demand fundamentals, including generation technologies preferred
  • Ability to understand and communicate technical concepts and their impact on Member and Customer portfolios
  • High degree of analytical skill, financial and technical concepts
  • Effective written and oral communication skills as well as computer skills
  • Excellent customer relationship management skills
  • Strong ability to work with teams and coordinate contributions of others to achieve results


  • Act as the lead director of ACES departments for client-driven transmission strategies
  • Direct and perform transmission planning engineering studies on defined or proposed projects affecting ACES’ client portfolios
  • Gather and convey industry developments and market intelligence on transmission investment, transmission builds, regulatory developments, and other transmission matters
  • Follow RTO/ISO market rules and activities to provide policy recommendations for clients on physical transmission matters impacted by new market rules/procedures
  • Assist ACES’ clients with analysis and consultative guidance on transmission strategies consistent with individual client capabilities and business objectives
  • Provide written reports and deliver presentations to senior management and executives at client companies
  • Develop internal ACES capabilities with physical transmission and serve as subject matter expert on physical transmission topics
  • Manage departmental costs for the physical transmission function of ACES
  • Travel as required to diverse client locations in US
  • Adhere to all ACES corporate policies and comply with all ACES regulatory requirements, including but not limited to NERC, FERC, and relevant state regulations, as applicable to this position
  • Any additional responsibilities assigned by management
