Electric Lineworkers perform work related to the construction, maintenance, and repair of overhead and underground electrical distribution and transmission systems. Ames is a vibrant, progressive, university community of 66,000 residents in central Iowa. Electric Lineworkers construct, maintain, and repair electrical distribution and transmission system including stringing and pulling wires, setting poles and anchors, and climbing poles and transmission towers. Lineworkers install transformers, crossarms, insulators, primary switches, and other hardware. They may supervise helpers and train apprentices. Our lineworkers provide continuous feedback to co-workers during performance of all duties.
Other duties include sagging primary and secondary wires, locating trouble in primary and secondary lines, replacing fuses, and clearing short circuits in lines. Lineworkers may be required to build and maintain substations, transformer banks, and transformer platforms. Additionally, they may connect, disconnect, and repair service loops; install and connect metering equipment; and trim trees. All lineworkers must read and interpret blueprints and maps, operate a laptop computer for map information, and prepare reports of activities. They should be familiar with operating a digger derrick, bucket trucks, pickup trucks, and related equipment. This classification requires stand-by status on a rotating basis.
Candidates meeting the minimum qualifications will be invited to participate in the written exam. Exams are scheduled for Wednesday, June 6, Thursday, June 28, and Thursday, July 26 at 5:30 p.m. local time on Thursday, March 8, in Room 135 of Ames City Hall, 515 Clark Ave., Ames, Iowa. The job will remain posted through July 20, but candidate screenings will begin prior to the three test dates. Candidates scoring an average of 70% or greater on the written exam may be invited to continue in the hiring process to determine Civil Service eligibility.
