Energy Engineer

Local Unit & Position Description

DNV GL – Energy is seeking an Energy Engineer to join our Energy Insights team. The primary evaluation activity includes post-installation measurement and verification to ascertain the actual achieved energy performance of completed energy efficiency installations. This position is based out of our Arlington, VA office and will require travel up to 50% of the time for limited periods.


Tasks May Include

  • Define or update standardized energy efficiency measure savings equations for use in assessing the performance of utility energy efficiency and/or electrification programs
  • Perform on-site building inspections and energy efficiency assessments of electric and natural gas systems
  • Verify installations, operations and performance characteristics of energy efficiency equipment and/or renewable energy systems
  • Install measurement equipment, and clean and conduct analysis of measured data (lighting loggers, power recorders, data acquisition systems)
  • Perform energy analysis using Excel, Python, R, SAS or equivalent language and/or building simulation software
  • Analyze energy performance and report the impacts associated with equipment improvements
  • Interview energy managers, consumers, installation contractors, and other relevant personnel
  • Utilize building science expertise and analytics to deliver population-level customer insights
Position Qualifications


  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering required
    • Concentration in Mechanical, Electrical, Industrial or Architectural Engineering preferred
  • 1 year of experience with building science, energy efficiency, distributed energy resources, and Internet of Things technologies preferred
    • Experience with building simulation tools such as eQuest, EnergyPlus, OpenStudio a plus
    • MATLAB, Python, R, SAS or equivalent programming proficiency a plus
  • This position is primarily office based, however there will be periods where extensive field work (up to 50% travel) will be required
    • Ability to lift up to 30 pounds, ability to climb ladders, and spend several hours walking around buildings and on rooftops
  • Demonstrated consulting skills and/or team leadership experience is a plus
  • Excellent written and verbal English communication skills
