IMEA is a wholesale electric supplier to 32 Illinois municipal electric systems with long-term contracts with its member utilities. Each of these communities owns and operates its own electric distribution system, with over half owning and operating local power generation plants.  IMEA provides service to members through a combination of joint power plant ownership and long-term power supply agreements, as well as related energy and operational services. IMEA also manages a wholesale natural gas agency, the Illinois Public Energy Agency that serves 12 municipal gas systems and 2 cooperatives in the state of Illinois.    IMEA also provides management services to the Illinois Municipal Utilities Association for 55 municipal utilities throughout the state as well.  The three entities operate 24x7x365 and have a combined annual budget near $375 million from our state of the art facility in Springfield, Illinois.

General Responsibilities

The Energy Services Representative reports to the Vice President, Member & Energy Services and is responsible for working directly with participating member community representatives and their key customers of the Illinois Municipal Electric Agency (IMEA) and the Illinois Public Energy Agency (IPEA).  They would provide information and expertise regarding products and services available through key accounts programs; identify opportunities for marketing products and services; and develop, market and deliver customized products, programs and services to key energy customers.  They would continually seek opportunities to reduce costs, improve services and improve communications.

Specific Responsibilities and Duties

  1. Maintains contracts and relationships with member municipals and identifies key energy customers along with promoting loyalty and positive relations
  2. Performs member visits on members/energy services with focus on key accounts and assists members with setup and follow-up on key accounts programs
  3. Executes marketing and contracting with municipal and end use Demand Response customers
  4. Conducts energy audits and infrared scanning of member customers and distribution system
  5. Handles marketing, follow-up and verification of energy efficiency projects for members
  6. Identifies and leads customer/member communications and education of State/Federal rules and programs along with other energy options
  7. Implements and maintains the Social Media Playbook to ensure members utilize social media methods to communicate with customers moving forward
  8. Assists in media/legislative communications with Director of Government Affairs (i.e. provide fact finding and presentation materials to assist in key contact communications with media and legislators/policy makers)
  9. Develops, analyzes and presents rate comparisons with local, regional and out of State utilities.  Presents analysis to elected officials, customers and others as needed
  10. Assists and provides backup duties in IMUA safety and workplace training and obtain necessary certifications


A Bachelor’s degree in business, marketing, finance, engineering, economics, communications or a related discipline.  An understanding of and experience in the electric power industry and natural gas industry including an understanding of utility marketing or economic development activities and an understanding of and experience with customer outreach programs.

This individual will also possess strong written and oral communication skills, capable of clearly expressing complex or detailed technical concepts to a variety of audiences in reports, letters, training manuals, news articles, memorandum, press releases, announcements and presentations along with basic computer skills to include use of word processing, spreadsheet, database, desktop publishing, and presentation software, and Internet.  Excel, Word and Power Point skills are valued.

In addition, IMEA seeks individuals that possess:

  1. Ability to communicate clearly and effectively on routine matters with other IMEA staff and members
  2. Ability to obtain training certifications as needed to include CPR, Flagger, etc.
  3. Basic analytical and mathematical skills to include algebra
  4. Ability to work independently, set priorities, and manage multiple tasks/projects simultaneously
  5. Ability to work well in a team oriented environment
