Engineering – System and Resource Planning Intern

The New York Independent System Operator (NYISO) manages the efficient flow of electricity on more than 11,000 circuit-miles of high-voltage transmission lines, dispatching power from hundreds of generating units across the state. The NYISO’s System and Resource Planning Department invites applications for full-time internship opportunities.

The successful intern will participate in the development and implementation of a variety of projects including:

Transmission Studies:
The intern will work on projects including the development of coding to enable TARA simulation of RAS/SPS actions and evaluating recent developments in PSS/E N-1-1 capability. This individual will perform simulations in PSS/E and TARA. Some Python scripting may be required.

Public Policy and Interregional Planning
The intern will review potential technology advancements and public policy disruptions to future power and energy system, identify probable challenges based on publicly available information, and analyze innovative opportunities to proactively address these challenges. This individual will learn how we plan the modern power system.

Economic Planning
The intern will perform various input and output assessments for the Production Cost Modeling (PCM) of the New York and surrounding state’s generation and transmission modeling efforts. This individual will characterize existing renewable energy resource performance in order to provide recommendations for improved modeling of existing facilities and anticipated/assumed additions, and work with the modeling team to develop an environmental/energy storage metrics post-processor to evaluate PCM output and compare it to the historical performance of the existing fleet.

Load Forecasting and Analysis
The intern will work with the Load Forecasting and Analysis team on Solar PV Database Development and Analysis. This intern will review data files databases associated with behind the meter solar PV from inverter data and create a database of the data, as well as perform analysis on the results by comparing inverter data to other metrics, including irradiance and alternate estimates of solar PV.

System Modeling
The intern with work on development of Python scripts for various data checks for power flow and short circuit data. This individual will also work closely with the Model on Demand Subject Matter Expert to enhance the existing process efficiency, and create database for the efficient tracking of generator survey data and dynamic models used by the NYCA generators.

  • Completion of Sophomore/Junior or Graduate level in Electrical/Mechanical Engineering, Economics, Mathematics or Computer Science or Information Science. 
  • Ability to apply principles of logical, analytical, and scientific thinking to practical problems
  • Experience with power system simulation software such as PSS/E is desired
  • Prior use of Matlab, Python, and/or SQL preferred.
