Vision: INL will change the world's energy future and secure our critical infrastructure.Responsibilities The Idaho National Laboratory (INL) is seeking a well-qualified Postdoctoral Associate in materials science/engineering or chemical engineering or comparable discipline for the Process Science team within the Data and Software Sciences Department. You will focus on laboratory experiments to develop an electrochemical spectroscopic instrument for in-situ monitoring of changes in solid state chemistry driven by hydride formation and by corrosion. This position requires knowledge and experience on hydride formation/evolution and in electrochemistry and laboratory techniques on EIS, CV, RDE, RRDE, SOFC, SOEC, etc.; and knowledge of solid-state physics, oxide/hydride physics and chemistry, crystal structures, and density functional theory. You are expected to be proficiency on various materials fabrication and characterization methods, such as combustion method, ball-milling, tape-casting, and TEM, SEM, Raman. Familiarity with Python data analytics is a plus.
You are expected to be a strong asset to our interdisciplinary R&D team and work effectively both alone and as a team member. You must be self-motivated but also take direction from other team members and peers.
The position entails hands-on laboratory collection and interpretation of data, writing scientific manuscripts for journal publication, presentation of research results to internal and external audiences, at national and international conferences and meetings, and, as appropriate, proposing new research concepts and work with team members to write and submit proposals for new opportunities. You will also remain current with the literature in their technical domain.
PhD requirements must be completed by commencement of appointment and within the previous 5 years
PhD in materials science/engineering or chemical engineering or comparable disciplines
Demonstrated oral and published written communication skills
Knowledge and experience on hydride formation/evolution
Knowledge and experience in laboratory electrochemistry techniques including electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), cyclic voltammetry (CV), linear sweep voltammetry (LSV), equivalent circuit model (ECM).
Prior hands-on experience in high temperature solid state electrochemistry tests, modeling and analysis (CV, LSV, EIS, chronometry, RDE, RRDE, SOFC, SOEC etc), especially related to hydride and oxide evolution of cladding materials.
Solid background on density functional theory, solid state physics, oxides physics and chemistry, crystal structures.
Proficiency on various materials fabrication and characterization methods, such as combustion method, ball-milling, tape-casting.
Familiarity with analytical chemistry/using techniques such as TEM, SEM, XRD, electron microscopy, chemical analyses.
