Infrastructure Spec I - NTW (Telecom Field Ops)

The Infrastructure Specialist I – NTW ensures effective and efficient installation, change management, incident management, and problem management processes as part of the IT Telecom Field Operations function related to Ameren's¿ telecommunication systems which include, long-haul fiber optics, microwave, wireless mesh, private land mobile radio, advanced metering infrastructure (AMI), SCADA, and leased carrier services along with underlying support infrastructure (towers, tower lighting systems, batteries, emergency generators, HVAC ). Collectively these Smart Grid communication technologies will help drive next-generation grid modernization at Ameren. As part of the IT Telecom Field Operations function this position will work directly with both IT and operational design teams and field teams to deliver both project design and maintenance objectives.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Work with peer operational departments in the work planning, coordination, implementation, and support of corporate and Smart Grid communication networks and supported utility applications.¿
  • Assist network design functions with the selection, adherence, and continuous improvement of field standards for the implementation and support of corporate and Smart Grid communication networks.
  • Serve as single-point of contact between network design and construction execution. Perform bid walks, evaluate site conditions relative to scope of work and out of scope work, and prepare cost estimates.¿
  • Reviews network maintenance inspections reports and recommends /drives corrective actions to ensure high availability.
  • Assists with departmental field resource forecasting and planning to match fluctuating demands for communication technicians and other field resources.
  • Drives continuous improvement efforts to deliver a best-in-class mobile workforce for the support of advanced corporate and Smart Grid communications networking.
  • Assists departmental leaders with the development, implementation, and maintenance of a comprehensive field resource training program that ensures industry leading telecommunications networking support.
  • Keeps abreast of developments in telecommunications networking and field service best practices including industry safety best practices.
  • Directs supplemental outside consultants/vendors in the development and implementation of various field service projects and initiatives.
  • Report project status and performance data as required to management.


Associate's Degree in Computer Science, Management Information Systems, Engineering, or equivalent computer or business related degree from an accredited college or university, OR 60 credit hours toward completion of a Bachelor of Science Degree in Computer Science, Management Information Systems, Engineering, or equivalent computer or business related degree from an accredited college or university. Relevant experience may be considered in lieu of degree. Two or more years of experience in any of the following areas:  TCP/IP networks, LAN/WAN networks, Experience in telecommunication work, involving one or more of the following areas, fiber optics transmission, microwave transmission, wireless 3G/LTE, wireless mesh, private mobile radio, or SCADA communications preferred. Experience in utility automation or Smart Grid

The IT Infrastructure Specialist I – NTW has the ability to travel within Ameren's service territory up to 50% of the time.
