IT Intern - Rotational Job

The applicant must be energetic and competent, and willing to commit to a minimum 18-month part-time internship rotation program with Xcel Energy Information Technology organization. The length of the rotation could be extended to adjust to the intern’s graduation date. The applicant’s graduation date must not proceed the completion date of the internship rotation program.


Must currently be enrolled in an accredited college or university and pursuing an undergraduate degree in the field of computer science, management information systems, computer engineering, engineering, mathematics. Must be a current student. No graduate student applicants, please.

-  Junior standing or will be junior status in next few months.

-  High academic standing - GPA of 3.2 or higher

- Proficient knowledge of Microsoft Office suite applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access)

- Strong work ethic and initiative

- Ability to work well in a team environment

- Strong written and verbal communication skills

-  Any experiences with the following technologies would be desired - Windows, UNIX (AIX and Linux), TCP/IP Cisco (routers and switches), Korn/Born/C shell scripting, C/C++, Java, SQL Server, SQL/PLSQL, Oracle, OSISoft® PI, Hadoop,SAPLumira, Tableau, D3, Python, JavaScript, Pig, R, SAP HANA, Hive, Teradata




Xcel Energy has an opportunity for a long-term rotational internship with the Information Technology organization. This unique internship will offer access to work with several departments. The successful candidate will gain insight and exposure to the elements of how the IT business works. Over the course of 18 months of part-time employment (20 hours weekly), the intern will work with the following groups:

IT Service Delivery - how does IT contribute to company results (business objectives and goals as well as strategic planning)

Enterprise Application - how technology application is developed and maintained (enterprise application and infrastructure footprints, including interdependencies and reliability expectations, multi-source model, vendor management, hiring selection process)

Governance - how are all technology needs identified, prioritized and managed (basic financial processes and principles, value vs. risk trade-offs and project lifecycle)

IT Technology Operations - what is the infrastructure that enables technology and how that technology and infrastructure is maintained (design, planning, installation and maintenance for IT infrastructure including hardware, software, data center components, data, voice, radio, microwave and video communications )

IT Security - The intern will support the IT Security group and have the opportunity to learn about, observe and participate in their daily activities and processes. The processes include IT security policies and standards, IT regulatory compliance and IT security controls testing, Cyber security, critical infrastructure protection, corporate systems and data protection, security monitoring and incident management. As well as security access administration, critical and noncritical systems recovery planning, testing and recovery management in the event of system failures.

Business Intelligence- The intern will support the BI Analytics department with all analytical needs as well as the opportunity to assist in implementation of a big data system. Responsibilities will include gathering reporting requirements, assisting with the development of new reports using a variety of tools. Assisting with assignments from various business areas and learning new data sources. Learning different tools such as Business Objects, Teradata, JMP, Lumira, Hadoop.
