Job Description Summary

Perform skilled work to assist in the construction and maintenance of overhead and underground electric transmission and distribution lines.

Essential Job Functions

  • Construct, repair, replace, and maintain overhead and underground electric transmission and distribution lines.
  • Set poles for lights and power lines: set single and three phase pad mount transformers and underground transformers, install concrete and transformer bases.
  • Climb transmission and distribution poles.
  • String primary and secondary lines, connect and disconnect energized lines, and install conductors or insulators.
  • Install fiber optic cable.
  • Troubleshoot single phase and 3 phase underground primary loops.
  • Provide on-the-job and safety related training to apprentices.

Ancillary Job Functions

Education and Experience - An equivalent combination of education, training and experience will be considered

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Successful completion of apprenticeship.
  • Must maintain a valid class A CDL with airbrake and combination trailer endorsements.
  • Must maintain CPR certification.
  • Must obtain licensing and/or certification in pole top rescue, bucket truck rescue, confined spaces and climbing.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities which may be representative, but not all-inclusive of those commonly associated with this position

  • Knowledge of tools such as hoists, winches, crimping tools, and related hand tools.
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safe work practices connected with high voltage electrical work.
  • Clear verbal communication skills and ability to give and follow written and oral instructions.
  • Strong interpersonal skills in order to provide excellent customer service.
  • Some knowledge of basic computer software and related equipment.
  • Ability to effectively organize and prioritize work as well as concentrate on multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Ability to read schematics of job prints and underground system maps.
  • Ability to work under general supervision and make responsible decisions.
  • Ability to work on-call and respond within 30 minutes at all hours of the day/night.
  • Ability to use good judgment and think quickly and rationally in difficult or stressful situations.

Work Environment – Environmental or atmospheric conditions commonly associated with the performance of the functions of this job

  • Regularly work with risk of electrical shock.
  • Work in varying, inclement weather conditions and in hazardous traffic conditions.
  • Work in high, dangerous places and near moving mechanical parts.
  • Exposed to fumes or airborne particles, oils, extreme heat, and potentially hazardous or cancer-causing agents or chemicals.
  • Subjected to loud noise from engines and power tools.
