Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent, plus three (3) years of building maintenance and construction work, including heating, cooling, electrical, and plumbing systems.

Licenses or Certifications:
Texas Class "C" Operator's License.

Physical Requirements:
Moderate. Tasks involve bending, lifting, walking, carrying, or using a force equal to lifting up to fifty (50) pounds

Notes to Applicants

The Austin Energy (AE) Maintenance Worker III position works alongside with the Facility Service Specialist in handling building maintenance at the Town Lake Center and all other AE locations as required to support the 24/7-hour Utility operations. The Maintenance Worker conducts building inspections interiorly and exteriorly every morning for needed repairs and maintenance in order to provide a safe and healthy environment for all employees and visitors.

The Maintenance Worker III handles a wide variety of building maintenance job functions to include, but not limited to the following:

  • Assists with facility maintenance ticket request for AE buildings
  • Performs internal and external building maintenance, repairs and upgrades related to minor construction, electrical and plumbing

  • Assists in various types of safety building inspections (ex. building, plumbing, fire and alarm inspections)

  • Responds to temperature change requests and submits operational requests for elevated HVAC work

  • Performs personnel moves throughout AE buildings

  • Interprets and understands blue prints to perform facility and property maintenance work

    This position is physically demanding and requires daily year around outdoor activities during extreme hot and inclement weather. Extensive and frequent walking, sitting, standing, kneeling, squatting, bending, twisting upper body, pushing, pulling, climbing ladders and stairs is required to perform essential job functions. Finger and manual dexterity is required to frequently operating vehicles, power tools and equipment. Job duties also include lifting heavy equipment and a variety of building materials. Building materials may include wood and modular furniture, metal cabinets, heavy doors, heavy equipment and all types and sizes of sand bags and boxes.

    This position is categorized as Essential Personnel, who are required to work during emergencies and bad weather to support operations. Weekend and holiday work is occasionally required due to bad weather events and various disasters. Additional weekly work hours may be required to support operations. Hours and days off are subject to change to address business needs.

Duties, Functions and Responsibilities

Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.

  1. Inspects buildings and equipment for needed repairs and maintenance.
  2. Repairs and maintains heating and cooling systems as required. Installs or replaces floors and ceramic tiles. Repairs or replaces electric plugs and cords.
  3. Drives vehicles as needed.
  4. Performs service on pumps, air handlers, cooling towers, etc.
  5. Repacks, changes oil/filters, lubricates, etc.
  6. Operates drills, buffers, grinders, sanders, and various power saws, i.e. radial arm, skill, etc.
  7. Operates acetylene cutting torch, welder, etc.
  8. Performs basic plumbing installations/repairs i.e. install and repair faucets, unclog drains, replace valves, etc.
  9. Performs semi-skilled carpentry work in the construction and repair of walls, ceilings, etc.
  10. Operates forklift.
  11. Reads profiles/blueprints.
