Mechanical Maintenance Technician, Assistant Level 1

Job Functions:

  • Under direct, but not constant supervision, and working on a rotating or straight shift as may be required, to install, inspect, repair, maintain, and modify plant equipment and to perform other work as may be required such as, but not limited to, the following:
  • Conduct special and routine surveillance tests on plant equipment to establish its condition or potential for deterioration which may impact plant or equipment performance or reliability.
  • Work independently using drawings, sketches, or written or verbal instructions in executing specific work requests.
  • Check to ensure that equipment to be worked on has been properly isolated and protected. Take steps to insure that proper safety devices are in use and understood before work starts.
  • Erect scaffolds and rigging for plant activities.
  • Operate pipe and bolt threading machines, power saws, drill presses, hydraulic presses, grinders, and other general shop equipment.
  • Perform skilled machinists work operating such equipment as lathes, milling machines, and procession grinders.
  • Operate acetylene or other heating torches or gas or electrical welding equipment as needed for heating of equipment or areas or performing minor welding, soldering, or brazing operations as required for their assigned work.
  • When properly qualified, perform certified welding in accordance with prescribed procedures.
  • Perform skilled pipefitting work in accordance with prescribed procedures.
  • Work on a general range of nuclear power plant piping and tubing repair, cutting, threading, bending, fitting and installation, including valves and heat exchangers.
  • Communicate verbally or in writing with authorized inspectors or other representatives of plant management of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission or any plant activities with which he has been involved.
  • Follow the Workman’s Protection Assurance program and the use of Radiation Work Permits.
  • To assist on other jobs as required and perform incidental or less skilled work as required, including sweeping/cleaning shop area.
  • Properly drive a motor vehicle when directed or when required to perform duties.
  • On an as needed basis to serve in any other plant activities for which trained.

Special Responisbilities:
Journeymen will direct on-the-job training of Assistants. Journeymen and Assistants will participate in ongoing training, including successful completion of TPEs.
To develop and maintain complete understanding of all facets of the plant emergency program and plant security system. To react as appropriate in the protection of the public in case of an operational emergency. To serve as an active participant in these programs.


Qualifications for Assistant Journeyman:
 

  • An applicant for the Journeyman Program shall:
  • Be at least 18 years of age at time of application.
  • Have graduated from high school or passed a recognized high school equivalency examination.
  • Pass the physical which is required for that craft, including medical exam.
  • Employees receiving a disciplinary suspension within 12 months prior to the (common) acceptance date of the assistant position(s) may be disqualified as a bidder at the discretion of the company.
  • Have demonstrated interest and pride in craftsmanship.
  • Possess ability to perform the essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Pass the requirement for access at the Callaway Plant.
  • Pass the appropriate test for entry into the line of promotion or job.
  • Possess the required education or experience for entry into the line of promotion at the assistant level, as follows:
  • Three years of experience doing comparable work OR
  • Completion of a Machinist apprenticeship program complying with 29 CFR 29.5 –Standards of apprenticeship OR
  • Associates Degree in Industrial Maintenance Technology from Ranken Technical College or equivalent program OR
  • Pass the appropriate competency exam.

Terms of Promotion

  • All employees will enter the line of promotion as Assistant Journeyman Level 1.
  • Employees shall advance to Assistant Journeyman Level 2 after successfully completing onethird (1/3) of the Task Performance Evaluations (TPEs) required of the Mechanic classification at the time of entry into the Machinist Mechanic position, or after one year (excluding time absent), whichever occurs first.
  • Employees shall advance to Level 2 after successfully completing two-thirds (2/3) of the TPEs required for that classification at the time of entry into the Machinist Technician position.
  • Callaway employees incumbent as of 7/1/03 shall automatically advance to Journeyman level after two (2) years.
  • Employees shall advance to Journeyman after completing all of the TPE’s required for that classification at the time of entry into Machinist Technician position.
