Network Engineer (Smart Meter)

The Network Engineer designs communication systems to support smart meter infrastructure projects that meet specific end user requirements based on current standards as well as designs communication systems to support projects that add new capability.  The Network Engineer will work with a variety of groups and personnel to accomplish design, implementation, and support of the smart metering system. 

Key responsibilities include:

  • Engineering and implementation of design for deployment and operation of a smart meter field area network and integration with all operational systems
  • Provide operational support for the communication systems supporting a smart meter deployment
  • Design and implement converged IP communication networks for LAN, WAN, FAN, and NAN systems supporting smart metering and other distributed energy and distributed automation systems
  • Design and deployment of networking technologies including IPv6, fiber optics, IEEE 802.15.4g, and WI-Sun compliant systems for FAN and NAN designs
  • Basic firewall and firewall rule definition and implementation
  • Work with other engineers within the IT organization as well other business units that support both the communications grid, electrical grid and gas operations
  • Communicate with internal and external customers, as well as other utilities for solution implementation
  • Communicate with suppliers to develop solutions to meet the customer's needs
  • Work with other project teams and project managers to implement secure network solutions
  • Follow ITIL practices around incident, problem, change management, configuration, and knowledge management


Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering from an accredited college or university required. Candidates will follow the Engineering Technical Career Path, assuming they meet the minimum qualifications for the position and hold an Engineering degree from an accredited program. One or more years of experience with Landis & Gyr (L&G) AMI implementation and/or support required.

Experience in the following areas with a minimum of three years in one or more areas is preferred: routers, switches, firewalls, and related equipment, FANs, NANs, LANs, WANs, fiber optic transmission system, IP based wireless networks, SCADA networks, Smart Grid networks, or wireless technologies. Cisco CCNA Certification is preferred.

In addition to the above qualifications, the successful candidate will demonstrate:

The Network Engineer works a standard shift in an office environment with occasional travel to field locations. May be required to provide 24x7x365 support.  The Network Engineer must be able to balance the demands of project implementation with operational requirements.
