Job Brief

Under general supervision performs skilled, safe & productive work at a journeyman level in carpentry, concrete placement & installation, masonry, coatings, abrasive blasting, sheet metal/insulation, scaffolding, excavation shoring, asbestos removal, drisco pipe installation & other similar civil construction & maintenance common to NGS and CGS. Demonstrates skill & knowledge in executing plans & sketches or other written or oral directives, while accomplishing the work through the efficient use of manpower & resources. Note: Any one position may not include all the duties listed, nor do the example duties include all tasks which may be representative in positions of this class. 1st year, meet minimum requirements. Job Responsibilities

  • Working safely, including holding pre-job conferences to discuss plans and hazards of the job.
  • Plans and lays out work as assigned (through written, verbal or computer), determines, arranges for or orders manpower, tools, equipment and materials.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in using hand tools, power tools and other equipment necessary for construction and maintenance as assigned.
  • Possess general knowledge in the capabilities & uses of equipment to operate & directs its use on the job.
  • Utilize knowledge of blueprints, sketches, written & verbal orders to accomplish assigned work.
  • Train and/or instruct apprentices, laborers & other crew members in safe & proper use of tools, equipment & materials.
  • Proficient in using abrasive blast equipment such as soda blaster, liquid blaster, vacuum blaster, sand blaster and different blast media.
  • Skilled in surface preparation & application of coating to buildings, equipment & piping.
  • Mixes & applies coatings as required including but not limited to metalizing, rubber lining repairs, epoxies, fiberglass & paint.
  • Performs any carpentry work needed including building forms for concrete placement used in structures, framing, building cabinets, trim, etc.
  • Performs routine plumbing and pipefitting repairs, not pipefitting itself.
  • Keeps written records for timekeeping, tools, equipment, materials and other reports.
  • Proficient in the skills for the installation & removal of all types of scaffolding as per SRP standards.
  • Replaces all insulation & metal lagging after equipment maintenance. Repairing or refabricating pieces or areas as required.
  • Repairs and replaces boiler refractory.
  • Repairs, maintains and modifies heating, cooling and exhaust duct systems as directed throughout the plant.
  • Installs, repairs and fabricates all types of insulation and sheet metal fittings, sheet covers and other designs.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and skill in excavation as outlined in the SRP Trenching and Shoring Standards.
  • Proficient in the removal procedures of asbestos. (Certification may be necessary)
  • Proficient in skills necessary for rigging various types of material, equipment on plant site.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary for the installation and repairs of plastic fusion pipe.
  • Performs other related work within the plant as workload varies or emergencies occur as assigned.
  • On occasion the journeyman may be required to do light (not energized) heat trace work such as remove and replace heat trace wire so insulation and sheet metal can be installed (not to include terminations).
  • May perform mechanical work during periods of inactivity of C&M work or at peak work load periods.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Employee must work safely and efficiently in the performance of their job duties.  Must maintain effective working relationships with other employees, customers and the public.   Must have the ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions, and have the ability to accurately and legibly complete applicable paper work.  May be required to work a reasonable amount of overtime.


Pre-apprentice (C&M Man NGS/CGS) – Up to 1 year. Apprentice (C&M Man NGS/CGS) – 4 year. Graduate Apprentice (C&M Man NGS/CGS) – indefinite


Alternate Experience 1: Minimum 4 years of experience as a sheet metal/insulator with emphasis on power plant systems. Thorough understanding of plant insulations systems, asbestos removal, refractories & lagging properties.        

Alternate Experience 2: Minimum 4 years of experience as a painter with emphasis on power plant systems. Thorough understanding of plant piping, structures, paint properties, thinners, hazardous waste regulations, coating systems, blasting & asbestos regulations.

Alternate Experience 3: Minimum 4 years of experience as a scaffold builder with emphasis on power plant systems, including plant piping, structural layout. Thorough understanding of System, Safeway, & TubeLox scaffolds, concrete forming & placement, construction standards & asbestos abatement procedures.

Or equivalent experience.
