Plant Electrical Engineer

Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories seeks an Electrical Engineer to design, maintain, test, and improve our campus power systems. SEL is a dynamic company and is looking for a creative, detail oriented engineer to work with our Property, Information Services, our local Utility, and others to ensure our campus and employee owners have the best and most reliable power. The engineer and team will be responsible for the electrical needs of over 1,000,000 square feet of owned space, multiple sites, 2.6 megawatts and growing of backup generation with access to the talent of our R&D, engineering services, and application engineers. We're looking for a candidate to understand, own, redline, maintain and create our campus building electrical systems. This starts with good working rapport with the local utility's transmission, distribution to our campus and once on our campus complete ownership from the transformer to the wall outlet, various building loads and lighting. This candidate has a strong understanding about how to increase our efficiency and innovate by using best known practices which includes SEL products. The candidate needs a comprehensive understanding of all the IBC (International Building Code), and state(s) energy code issues; especially the hidden effective dates where codes have changed in previous years but are implementing now or in the near future. Interest in joining or sitting on a state code committee is desirable. Ability to design low voltage alarm, security, HVAC systems will also be important.

This individual will need to be highly collaborative with SEL Information Systems, Security, Facilities Operations, Design and Construction teams. They'll be a sole contributor to design, field inspection and commissioning teams inside the property group. They will have the opportunity to build rapport across SEL's Research & Development and Engineering Services teams to draw from their collective knowledge.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain technical expertise in the design of building systems.
  • Develop and maintain knowledge of SEL equipment and solutions for site or building electric power system protection and automation.
  • Work within a project team to develop design specifications and construction documents to deliver projects on time, on budget and to specification.
  • Perform various studies (i.e. electrical, efficiency, conservation, generation and lighting).
  • Work with and train other departments on applying best practices and integrating information from all sources.
  • Complete assigned work within agreed upon schedule and budget to a high level of quality.
  • Supervisory duties as assigned.
  • Follow and apply SEL Values, Principles of Operations, and World Class Manufacturing Principles.
  • Understand. Create. Simplify.
  • Other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

  • B.S. in Electrical Engineering
  • Five years relevant experience with low voltage (13.2 kva and smaller) electrical building systems and/or industrial solutions within a manufacturing environment
  • Good working knowledge of all codes relating to commercial and industrial buildings
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD software
  • Excellent technical training skills
  • Strong writing, documentation, and speaking skills
  • Ability to learn new skills and assume new responsibilities
  • Ability to work cooperatively in a team environment
  • Background check results satisfactory to SEL
  • Negative drug test result(s)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Professional Engineer license (ability to get WA license within 6 months)
  • Experience with electric power transmission, distribution, and/or generation systems
  • Experience being a part of project teams
  • Good knowledge of system protection, integration and automation applications
  • Commissioning certification
