Power System Operations Manager


The Power System Operations Manager oversees all aspects of the operations of Platte River's interconnected transmission system in the most safe and reliable manner. The manager is responsible for providing leadership and direction, maintaining compliance with all NERC/WECC regulatory standards applicable to PRPA's transmission system operation departments, long term planning, setting departmental and organizational goals and business objectives. Directly supports transmission engineering, communications, maintenance and generation/marketing functions.


This position is responsible for providing direct reports with the tools, processes and knowledge needed to perform the duties of ensuring Power System Operations compliance with applicable NERC/WECC reliability standards.

Essential functions


  • Provides leadership, coaching and mentoring to the power system operations staff; develops work plans, sets goals, assigns work, monitors staff performance, and is responsible for ensuring work plans are successfully implemented
  • Ensures Power System Operators-Transmission have adequate, viable tools in place to operate the Platte River transmission system economically and reliably
  • Provides oversight of power system operations coordination with Platte River city owners, other departments and neighboring reliability entities
  • Develops, implements and maintains power system operations operating processes/procedures
  • Develops and manages department budgets in accordance with Platte River policies and requirements
  • Oversees the development, maintenance, coordination, delivery and administration of the PRPA PSO Training Program, utilizing the Systematic Approach to Training (SAT), required by NERC/WECC
  • Oversees and leads power system operations audit preparations for upcoming NERC/WECC audits
  • Assures auditable compliance with applicable standards; monitors NERC/WECC compliance activities, “lessons learned” and disturbance recommendations and maintains applicable required compliance documentation
  • Ensures completion of power system operations reports and surveys required by NERC/WECC
  • Represents power system operations in the Platte River disturbance/event analysis process which may include leading the investigation, gathering evidence, record keeping and reporting
  • Represents Platte River on the Southwest Power Pool (SPP) Western Reliability Executive Committee (WREC)
  • Communicate with internal and external stakeholders in an open and timely manner, providing  needed information and support
  • Work safely and demonstrate safe work practices
  • Maintains regular and reliable attendance
  • Represent PRPA power system operations on applicable local regional committees or subcommittees
  • Performs other duties as assigned


Minimum qualifications


  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, business administration, economics, marketing, or related field, OR equivalent combination of education and work experience
  • Minimum of five (5) years of bulk electric system operations experience
  • Thorough working knowledge of power system operations
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to perform duties and problem solve during stressful, time-sensitive situations
  • Ability to exercise good judgment in routine and emergency conditions
  • Ability to read and understand complex contracts and materials
  • Ability to exercise project management skills
  • Strong computer skills are required to operate computerized systems
  • Knowledge of NERC and WECC reliability standards
  • Must possess and maintain a current NERC Certified System Operator certification certificate as either a Transmission Operator or a Reliability Coordinator
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to remain insurable under Platte River's vehicle liability policy


Desired qualifications


  • Three (3) or more years of supervisory experience


Bi-weekly salary range for this position: $ 4,305 - 5,919 (DOQ)
