Senior Controls Engineer - Hydro Generation Engineering

Job Brief

Provide engineering services to SRP in a technically sound, safe, timely and cost effective manner to enable SRP to realize its goals and objectives for providing water and energy related services.

Develops plans, specifications, evaluations, design documents, integrated systems analysis, cost estimates, budgets, associated with the design, operation, and maintenance of SRP’s Hydro-electric generation fleet control systems.

Provides technical support consultation and recommendations to management as a result of analyzing Hydro’s processes, equipment, or Canal facilities.

Reviews financial data from budget and actual costs of projects. Operates independently and seeks guidance when appropriate.

Position may be required to work extended hours, including 24 x 7 coverage during storms or other emergencies.

Job Responsibilities

  • Provide technical engineering support to field construction, testing and commissioning crews.
  • Performs field engineering work and engineering analyses.
  • Prepares recommendation material for management consideration.
  • Follow procedures/job process to include preparation of QA checklists and reports for compliance with design configuration control policies and regulatory compliance requirements.
  • Maintain understanding of NERC CIP Standards, following policies and procedures to ensure compliance with the requirements.
  • Monitor, maintain, and program intelligent electronic devices /PLCs/DCS/RTUs, develop alarm and DCS communication point lists, and prepare test plans. Understanding of communication protocols such as TCP/IP, MODBUS and DNP3, architectures such as serial and routable communications, and function block & ladder logic programming.
  • Plan and schedule work to include developing a detailed scope of work, creating project schedules and sequencing of work, conducting coordination meetings, and communicating with key stakeholders.

Education

Completion of a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited curriculum or State Professional Engineering Registration.

Experience

Five (5) years full time experience actively engaged in engineering practice. Must have demonstrated the successful accomplishment of work of the nature defined for the job of Senior Engineer.

Promotion to Level 2 requires a minimum of two years of experience at Level 1; demonstrated capability to perform advanced and more difficult work as determined by the supervisor.  Promotion to Senior Level requires a minimum of three years of experience at Level 2; is fully competent in all aspects of functional area of assignment and as such would be recognized as a specialist in area of assignment and may have periodic or occasional lead responsibilities.

Additional Information

Minimum 4 years of experience at an electric utility, industrial plant, or engineering firm.

Demonstrated experience with serial, Ethernet, and multiple communication protocols.

Experience in setup and configuration with a broad range of network devices and interfaces.

Good understanding of cybersecurity fundamentals required.

Knowledge of 3-phase and electric power systems preferred.

Experience with Allen Bradley PLCs and DCS Ovation preferred.

Occasional travel to supplier’s facilities, industry organizational functions and SRP facilities.

Ability to work effectively with various organizational groups within SRP.

Certifications or Testing Required

Must possess the appropriate valid Arizona driver’s license.
