Senior Principal Consultant - Power System Distribution Planning

Local Unit & Position Description

DNV GL – Energy’s Energy Advisory group has an exciting opportunity for a Senior/Principal Engineer in Distribution Planning Service line for its Power System Advisory (PSA) Department. DNV GL-Energy’s PSA provides creative, cost effective and practical solutions to stakeholders in the power generation, transmission and distribution systems. The Engineer must demonstrate vision, drive, and be passionate to contribute, grow and expand the PSA business in the Americas. This role also involves business development and high-value delivery of consulting services contributing to PSA’s overall regional success.

This position could be based out of any of the following offices preferably in Dallas, TX, Oakland, CA; Chalfont, PA; Medford, MA.


Tasks May Include: 

  • Execute technical analyses including unbalanced/balanced load flow, steady state, short circuit, flicker, motor start, Volt/VAR, harmonic, hosting capacity, arc flash, protection & coordination analyses and distributed generation interconnection
  • Conduct technical analyses associated with technical industry standards including but not limited to IEEE 1547, IEEE 1366, IEEE 519, National Electric Safety Code (NESC) ANSI C2 standards
  • Developing models, mitigation plans and propose system improvements (as needed)
  • Actively attend industry events, stakeholder meetings and stay up-to-date with industry working groups
  • Assist in preparing responses to Statement of Qualifications (SOQ’s), Request for Proposals (RFP’s) for new tenders/bids/opportunities
  • Subject Matter Expert (SME) in distribution planning/DER integration and perform QA/QC on related project deliverables
  • Adhere to department’s project quality and timeliness procedures
  • Establish and maintain sustainable relationships and good communication with team members and external clients
  • Assist with the team’s research goals in terms of development of new techniques and/or analytical tools to further the team’s performance in terms of efficiency and/or capability improvements
Position Qualifications


  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering with extensive knowledge of Electric Power Systems
  • Minimum 5 years in direct experience in distribution planning and/or operations
  • Hands-on experience with distribution analysis software packages such as Synergi Electric, MILSOFT WINDMIL, CYME DIST, SKM and ETAP
  • Preferred Skills
    • Graduate level degree with emphasis on Electric Power Systems
    • Experience with power system analysis packages such as PSS/E, POWERWORLD and DIGSILENT
    • Experience working in utility or consulting environment
    • Working knowledge of automation scripts such as Python, VB, for development of automation modules
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PPT)
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, business and technical writing.
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal, problem solving and analytical skills.
  • Strong time management skills
  • Ability to work in a high-paced team environment
  • Must have permanent work authorization to work in the US.
