Summary

Responsible for substantive real estate and corporate legal services, including case management of a number of large and small legal matters and/or projects and research, in support of and under direction of attorneys in Xcel Energy Legal Services.  Preferred candidates for this position will have transactional real estate experience (including purchase and sale, leases, easements, title review), condemnation experience and municipal/right-of-way experience.  Position will involve interaction with all areas of Xcel Energy. Independently works with outside counsel as required. Regularly represents Legal Services through direct contact with clients (in meetings and through internal correspondence). Specific duties will vary based on practice area.

Responsibilities

  • Initiates, drafts, and/or interprets complex correspondence, pleadings, and other documents; prepares summaries of documents as requested for accuracy and identifying issues for review and decision by attorney. Interacts with opposing counsel as needed.
  • Initiates, drafts, and/or interprets contracts, including leases, purchases and sales, Easements, real estate closing documents, utility franchise agreements and various other agreements and/or amendments; as requested, participates in the negotiation of terms and conditions of various contracts; conducts title and survey review and analysis. Work directly with outside vendors, with limited attorney involvement.
  • Coordinates the intake of legal research. Conducts necessary research, analyzes and reports on search results from digests, practice manuals and other sources.
  • Responds to and prepares discovery requests and responses; issues and manages legal holds; ensures appropriate document and electronic production and preservation; attends hearings, etc. as required.


Required (Sr Paralegal)

  • High school diploma required.
  • 5 or more years of practice as a paralegal in corporate law department, law firm, or government practice; equivalent relevant experience will be considered.
  • Excellent organizational, communication (both written and verbal) and computer (Microsoft Office software and WestLaw/Nexis-Nexis) skills.
  • Able to work independently and manage multiple large tasks simultaneously from various Xcel Energy attorneys and prioritize workload with a strong attention to detail.

 

Required (Paralegal Specialist)

  • High school diploma required.
  • 10 or more years of practice as a paralegal in corporate law department, law firm, or government practice; equivalent relevant experience will be considered.
  • Minimum 5 years if paralegal experience in a heavily regulated industry, with a strong preference for experience in a regulated utility or the energy industry.
  • Demonstrated mastery of practice area and professional skills; knowledge of Xcel Energy operations sufficient to handle routine matters within individual area of authority using discretion and initiative.
  • Excellent organizational, communication (both written and verbal) and computer (Microsoft Office software and WestLaw/Nexis-Nexis) skills.
  • Able to work independently and manage multiple large tasks simultaneously from various Xcel Energy attorneys and prioritize workload with a strong attention to detail.


Preferred

 

  • College degree, paralegal certificate/degree or equivalent education is preferred.
  • Preferred Candidate for this position will have transactional real estate experience (including purchase and sale, lease, easement, title review), condemnation experience and municipal/right-of-way experience.
