Job Description
The mission of the ERCOT Summer Internship Program is to partner with students pursuing academic excellence to create opportunities that stretch learning experiences into a work environment with intellectually challenging projects and assignments. These opportunities will promote utility industry awareness, growth, and identification of top talent for future employment. The summer internship will be 40 hours a week during the summer.  
 
Summary of responsibilities of the Transmission Planning Intern :

  • Work closely with planning engineers to enhance the set of tools used to assist in reliability analysis for the Regional Transmission Plan and Geomagnetic Disturbance Vulnerability Assessment.
  • Automate transmission planning analysis in PowerWorld and PSS/E using Python and/or VBA.

Project Deliverable:

  • Enhanced toolset for Regional Transmission Plan reliability analysis, which may include the following:
    • Research and develop tools to aid engineers in comparing reliability projects and identifying those that optimally serve both near term and long term planning conditions.
    • Evaluate, improve, and develop tools to aid engineers for more time-efficient power flow case conditioning, and reliability criteria violation identification.
  • Automate geomagnetic disturbance (GMD) Vulnerability Assessment, including use of a “moving box” for supplemental events, the ability to evaluate multiple field orientations and perform power flow analysis to screen for criteria violations.

Preferred experience:

  • Basic understanding of power system analysis
  • Experience with Python
  • Experience with PowerWorld and/or PSS/E
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and Access

Preferred work schedule of the intern:

  • 40 hours a week / Monday – Friday 8AM - 5PM
  • Must be available to work onsite – Interns will not be eligible for remote work.
  • May 26, 2020 – August 14, 2020

Our summer internship program is a paid learning experience targeting primarily for students who have a GPA of 3.0 or better and who have at least completed their sophomore year.
