The mission of the ERCOT Summer Internship Program is to partner with students pursuing academic excellence to create opportunities that stretch learning experiences into a work environment with intellectually challenging projects and assignments. These opportunities will promote utility industry awareness, growth, and identification of top talent for future employment. The summer internship will be 40 hours a week during the summer.

Summary of responsibilities of the Intern:

The primary responsibility for the intern will be working with Market Analysis team members to analyze events and trends occurring within the ERCOT power grid and wholesale electricity market or to study improvements to ERCOT’s systems.  As examples, previous interns have performed a variety of analyses such as studying improvements to the Reliability Unit Commitment and Security Constrained Economic Dispatch models, building models to predict load patterns within ERCOT, and building web browser-based tools for studying market conditions.

At the end of the summer the intern will present a summary of their work during the summer to Market Analysis team members and executive management.

Project Deliverables:

  • Analysis of events or trends occurring within the ERCOT grid and wholesale electricity markets or of improvements to ERCOT systems or models;
  • Documentation for any analysis tools or code that is developed; and
  • Presentation material for Market Analysis team members and executive management.

Desire Educational Level:

  • Applicants should be pursuing a bachelor’s or graduate-level degree in engineering, economics, or a related field, preferably with a focus on power systems, electricity markets, or energy.

Preferred Experiences:

  • Power system or electricity markets coursework
  • Familiarity with data analysis using tools such as Matlab, Python, R, SQL, SAS, or C#

Preferred work schedule of the Intern:

  • 40 hours a week / Monday – Friday 8AM - 5PM
  • Must be available to work onsite – interns will not be eligible for remote work
  • May 2020 – August 2020

Our summer internship program is a paid learning experience targeting primarily for students who have a GPA of 3.0 or better and who have at least completed their sophomore year.
