Supervisor of Environmental and Process Support

Position Summary Description

Plans, directs, coordinates and manages SGS Environmental and Process Support Lab to ensure full and effective compliance with all federal and state regulations, as well as safe, cost-effective and efficient control of plant chemistry.

Essential Functions
* Provides overall guidance and direction to the SGS Environmental and Process Support Lab departments to ensure compliance with all local, state and federal environmental laws and regulations.
* Approaches environmental and process solutions from a mass-balance approach utilizing knowledge in air, water and solid background.
* Utilizes collaboration between Process Support Lab, Environmental and Operations to maintain environmental compliance.
* Facilitates open communication among work groups at SGS and the corporate office.
* Recommends plant process chemistry limits for environmental and process control.
* Ensures proper sampling for systems is occurring that validates chemical control and/or utilization of chemicals.
* Ensures QA/QC plans and procedures are maintained and utilized by managed groups.
* Ensures SGS Environmental records are kept in an easily retrievable manner for agency inspection.
* Develops and Implements training necessary for Operations to understand compliance and chemistry for proper operation of the plant.
* Writes specifications for bulk chemicals.
* Utilizes and directs groups to investigate and test alternative fuels/chemicals to reduce costs, improve process performance, and/or minimize environmental concerns.
* Prepares, administers and controls an annual budget for SGS Environmental and Process Support Lab areas.
* Develops personnel to ensure flexibility and understanding between the various Environmental and Process Lab areas.
* Monitors Operations and Maintenance work efforts to avoid or reduce any potential environmental exceedance or violation.
* Reviews and interprets environmental laws, regulations, licenses, permits or plan changes.
* Recommends actions to reduce potential for un-permitted discharges.
* Ensures plans for testing emissions monitoring equipment in accordance with applicable regulations are in place.
* Reports any instances of environmental permit exceedances to the Environmental, Health & Safety Manager.
* Reviews and approves invoices from primary consultants and contractors supporting projects to ensure compliance with contract terms and conditions.
* Participates in the development of Cooperative and divisional short and long-term goals and objectives.
* Takes a proactive approach regarding personal safety, safety of others and comply with all OSHA and SECI safety rules. Must complete all necessary online or classroom safety courses as directed. Must lead in safety briefings and meetings.
* Takes a proactive approach regarding environmental rules and regulations governing the operation of the plant. Must complete all necessary online or classroom environmental courses as directed. Required to immediately report any, and all, environmental reportable incidents
* Other duties as applicable to the position or as assigned.
* Decision Making Authority
* Expenditure approval: $50,000.
* Employee timesheet approval, leave approval.
* Personnel Supervised
* Directs and supports the Senior I&C Technician, Sr. Environmental Compliance Analyst and Sr. Process Support Administrator.

Working Conditions
Some travel and work outside of normal business hours. Subject to call at all times. While working in certain areas of the plant there is the potential for exposure to hazards typical of an industrial working environment. Must be able to follow established protective measures including, wearing required personal protective equipment (PPE). Must be able to work extended hours.

Qualifications and Education Requirements
High school diploma required. Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or other Science with strong emphasis on chemistry prefer. Experience in industrial environmental fields with an emphasis on knowledge, interpreting, and guidance of regulations, guidelines and requirements. Eight years of progressively responsible power plant industry management experience, preferably combining modern power plant operations, engineering, environmental and lab experience. Must possess a valid driver’s license.
