APS Transmission Operations Engineering department has an opportunity for an Engineer II/III to join our team in a dynamic and exciting work environment as we strive to be best-in-class. The successful candidate will apply in-depth technical transmission engineering knowledge and expertise to ensure the safe and reliable operation of the grid. Our Engineer will plan and coordinate operating studies, provide real time transmission operations support, manage projects, generate reports, and represent APS in various industry groups.

 

Responsibilities:

 

  • All aspects of work scope in conducting transmission and sub-transmission studies including power flow, transient stability, voltage stability, and post-transient analyses.
  • Perform technical study work to provide operating guidance to APS operators, reliability coordinators and APS management. Study work includes seasonal studies, next-day studies, path clearance studies, planned and unplanned outage studies for BES and underlying facilities.
  • Produce reports for study results that include findings, planned mitigation options to remain within allowable operating limits, and development of operating procedures.
  • Various activities with EMS and advanced network applications include: coordinating with IT to build, maintain and validate the network model; verifying accurate solutions to both the State Estimator (SE) and Real-Time Contingency Analysis (RTCA), and Operator Training Simulator (OTS) applications; working with the reliability coordinator and neighboring utilities to correct errors and fine tune the network model.
  • Provide training and support for operators to use EMS offline study environment to run power flow and contingency analysis, and to simulate planned outages.
  • Maintain familiarity with NERC reliability standards as they relate to operation of the Bulk Electric System, and participate in compliance activities.
  • Maintain familiarity with WECC reliability requirements, participate in compliance activities, and remain involved with WECC working groups, task forces and regional subcommittees.
  • Work with the reliability coordinator and neighboring utilities to produce and validate power flow models for use in the operating horizon.
  • Work closely with transmission operators to ensure reliable operation of the grid; developing solutions for operational problems such as voltage, overload, congestion management etc.
  • Work with transmission and distribution planning groups to identify areas requiring upgrades for capacity and voltage control.
  • Focus on continuous improvement and identify opportunities for improvements in efficiency and accuracy.
  • Stay involved in industry groups and organizations. Research new developments and technology and make recommendations to management on their feasibility for company operations.
  • Seek out personal and professional development opportunities and continue to learn.
  • Monitor projects and recommend modifications to increase operating efficiency and ensure compliance with any regulatory requirements.
  • Provide technical direction to less experienced engineers.
  • Operations engineers provide on-call support to system operators, and respond to real-time system events which may include non-standard hours.

 

Minimum Requirements:

 

The successful candidate will have:

 

  • Engineer II - will have a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering plus two (2) years of applicable experience or; Professional Engineer or; equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Engineer III - will have a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering plus five (5) years of applicable experience or; Professional Engineer designation plus five (5) years working experience or; nine years equivalent combination of education and experience.

 

In addition our Engineer will have:

 

  • In-depth knowledge of power systems analysis and engineering applications
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills
  • Experience with Microsoft Office products including Word, Excel, Access, Visio and Outlook

 

Preferred

 

  • Masters (MS, MSEE) in Electrical Engineering with an emphasis in power systems.
  • Professional engineer (PE) designation.
  • Experience in transmission operations, transmission planning, large generator interconnection studies, short circuit studies, knowledge of relay and protection concepts.
  • Experience performing transient stability studies.
  • Proficiency with GE PSLF for power system analysis.
  • Experience on Siemens Spectrum EMS platform and Transmission Network Applications

 

Salary and Level will be based upon experience.
